1960s bungalow renovation cuts cinematic sprint in Belgium

House BPB, designed by Belgian architect David Bulckaen, is the imaginative reintepretation of a 1960s bungalow into a darkish, mysterious, up to date home influenced by the film A Single Male

Set within the leafy countryside outside Antwerp, House BPB, designed by the Belgian architecture observe of David Bulckaen, cuts a darkish, minimalist figure against the gentle foliage. The job, a spouse and children dwelling, was motivated by the Tom Ford film A Single Guy, explains the architect. Bringing collectively a clean up and lower, rectangular volume with a moody, somewhat mysterious cladding of dark insulation panels, the job is a clever 1960s bungalow renovation and extension.

‘One summer months evening, the thought took shape when it turned out that equally the consumer and myself were being big followers of the residence featured in the movie – the house developed in California by John Lautner. That shared really like introduced about instant chemistry. I based the style and design on the theory of the viewfinder of a camera, a reference to the professional exercise of one particular of the people.’

Creating the appropriate sights and framing the landscape via strategic openings were key in crafting this cautious, cinematic expertise. ‘[It is] as if you had been seeking by way of the lens of your camera,’ says Bulckaen. The structure’s areas alternate sights as a result of rooms and glimpses of courtyards and the woods surrounding the property, continuously reminding the residents of their leafy spot.

This suited the entrepreneurs perfectly. ‘The homeowners are very outside-minded, and appreciate to throw open windows and doors every time the temperature lets it,’ the architect suggests. ‘The old house, on the other hand, was really closed and introverted, had very few home windows, and there was practically no relationship to the yard and wider outdoors.’

The ‘summer room’, a residing house sitting in the structure’s new addition, results in being a centrepiece for the venture. This room provides 180-degree sights of the yard and when the windows open and the climate lets, it gets a person with the green landscape. The dark exterior cladding both insulates and unifies visually aged and new, whilst pleasantly contrasting with the light concrete and white plaster interiors. §
